The Department of Tamil was established in 1999 and has been a center of excellence for Tamil language and literature studies in Coimbatore. Recognized as one of the Top Tamil Literature Colleges in Coimbatore, the department offers Tamil as Part I for all undergraduate courses and introduced M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs in Tamil Studies in 2011. OBJECTIVE
- To promote Tamil language, literature, and culture by offering in-depth knowledge of classical and modern Tamil texts, grammar, and linguistic studies.
- To encourage students to participate in literary competitions, Tamil debates (Pattimandram), poetry writing, and drama performances, enhancing their communication and creative writing skills.
- To preserve and spread Tamil heritage through the study of Sangam literature, Bhakti movement texts, and Tamil epigraphy and folklore.
- To develop research aptitude by guiding students in Tamil research methodology, comparative literature, and academic paper presentations at state/national level seminars.
- To equip students for careers in Tamil journalism, translation, teaching, and media communication, aligning with the growing demand for regional language experts in the digital and publishing industries.
